Yes, I’m still alive

Hi all. For the millions who read my blog, and are wondering why I haven’t posted lately; yes, I am still alive. I’ve been home pretty much since May 1. So why the long time in writing? Well, I guess I’m just catching up on living. You know, playing w/ the kids, talking to the wife, staying late at work. The last thing I want to do is sit down at my computer and update my blog.

Guess I’m just old fashioned.

Family Fun Day to Grandfather Mountain

Since we all had off from school and work, we decided to take a family day trip to Grandfather Mountain, which is in the Blue Ridge Mountains outside of Boone, NC. Grandfather Mt. is privately owned by Mr. Hugh Morton, and is a great regional attraction. You can hike up several trails (which we did), and there is a swinging bridge that spans two huge rock formations. We only scratched the surface of the hiking; Joel and I plan on going back for higher destinations.

It was alot of fun, and the weather was great. Please check out the pictures on my flickr account. Happy Easter to everyone, and remember…

CHRIST IS RISEN!

Running on Empty

I must give credit to my friend and collegue, Jim Zangmeister, for this insightful word picture.

Imagine that you are driving across the country, at top speed, and you have little time for error. As you speed across the interstate, you notice that your gas gauge is getting lower and lower, approaching the dreaded “E” for empty. But, instead of stopping and re-fueling, you say to yourself:
“I’m too busy and too late to stop for gas! I gotta keep on going!!!”

We all can see the outcome of this little story, yet in our lives, we do this exact thing. Live faster, work harder, get more in a day. When do we stop to refuel? Edward M. Hallowell, in an editoral for the Los Angeles Times notes, “We think if we go fast enough, we’ll be able to create time when we won’t have to be busy. A seductive idea, but delusional. The key is to slow down and thrive today…”

As followers of Jesus Christ, we must remember to “be still and know that He is God.”

Ready for the week

Well, another week of challenges ahead, but looking forward to it. Spent the weekend in Garden City, SC w/ my family, at the invitation of our neighbors. Quite fun, and somewhat relaxing. Got to play my guitar on the beach on Sunday AM, and have a little worship time on the beach. Cori was somewhat embarrased, but soon started singing. It was fun.

Got home and took a long walk w/ our dog. It was good, after sitting in the car for so long.

Off to read “Living Grace” by Wayne Barber, given to me by my good friend, Gary Aldridge. Take care everyone.

Blog conviction

I am blessed to have many web savvy friends, who are regular contributors to their blogs. I enjoy reading and hearing what is happening in their lives, and it’s a great way to keep up.

Sadly, I’ve been falling under “blog conviction”, which is when you haven’t posted for over a month, and have no good excuse. And, all of your other web friends are keeping up, so why can’t you?

So, here’s to guys like Steve Knight, Nick Ciske, and Bob Souer, who, without manipulation or guilt, have helped me to break thru my blog conviction, and post now.

There you have it. Don’t wait for the film at 11.

Home…how wonderful it is

Finally home from Manila; what a great trip. To see God work thru the power of the preaching of His Word; that is truly amazing. My heart was warmed and encouraged to see so many people respond to the Gospel message. God is truly good.

And, the great thing is: I’M HOME! Getting to see my kids and my wife is a true joy, and one that gets sweeter each day. My Amy is like a fine French Bordeaux: she gets better, more complex, and more beautiful w/ age.

More later, when I can sleep thru the night.

One of the joys of being a dad is participating in your kid’s school projects. Erica, our youngest, asked me to take her “mini-me” on my trip to Manila, and take some pictures of mini-me visiting the Philippines.

So, check out the photo gallery link, and you’ll get to see Mini me, plus some other photos from the Philippines.

Power, poise, and penitence

People look to leaders in times of trial and trouble, sometimes for direction, sometimes for comfort. Common knowledge says that a leader who is strong and fearless is the one to follow. After all, would people support President Bush if he were unsure and indecisive?

My struggle is this: is this the same in God’s kingdom? The televangelist types who always appear to have it together; these folks say nothing to me. I’ve met followers of Christ who seem to be the most self effacing, humble persons alive. They are the ones that I am drawn to. A man who can say like Job, “Tho He slay me, yet will I praise Him.”

The balance seems to lie in who do you place your trust in? If your trust is in God, you have no reason to boast about yourself. If it’s in yourself, then maybe you do have to act like you’re in charge.

I’d rather trust in God…. Better track record, if you know what I mean.
